Reece Sharman-Newell, a 19-year-old freshman All-American at CSU-Pueblo and No. 2 outdoor 800-meter performer in NCAA Division 2 history at 1:45.56, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing in the 800 and 4x400-meter relay for the Thunderwolves at the national outdoor championship meet at Grand Valley State in Allendale, Mich. Sharman-Newell reflects on competing in the distance medley relay at the Division 2 indoor final in March at Pittsburg State in Kansas, and contributing to a seventh-place finish for CSU-Pueblo, but also shares his motivation from watching the 800 final, won by Wes Ferguson of Nebraska-Kearney in 1:50.05. He expresses gratitude for the opportunity to compete against Ferguson and reigning Division 2 outdoor champion Butare Rugenerwa of West Texas A&M, in addition to having CSU-Pueblo teammates Nathan Hood and Kaleb Tipton qualifying in the 800 field as well. Sharman-Newell explains how strong the training group is for the Thunderwolves, especially with 2018-19 outdoor champion and CSU-Pueblo alumni Thomas Staines, along with former Wake Forest All-American Robert Hepenstall and freshman Jack Dickson. He also examines the benefits of being coached by both Dave Ragan with his club Basingstoke and Mid Hants in England, along with Matt Morris at CSU-Pueblo, and how he has appreciated their attention to detail in his development and remain focused on the process and a long-term vision when it comes to training. Sharman-Newell shares his experiences from competing May 7 in the 800 at Portland Twilight, along with running the 1,500 at the Last Chance Invitational on May 15 at CSU-Pueblo, and how those races have contributed to his preparation for running prelims and finals in the 4x400 and 800 in Michigan. He also explains his ambition to race a significant summer schedule in the United Kingdom and the opportunity to compete against several professionals to gain valuable experience for the future. Sharman-Newell speaks about his academic pursuits in computer systems and cyber security, and the importance of planning his future outside of track, and how CSU-Pueblo has offered him impressive programs to learn from academically.
